Remote Interviews of Brussels Elites During the COVID-19 Crisis

Résumé

In this SAGE Research Methods case study, we explore the conduct of remote interviews as a research method. Although our insights may be applied to other contexts, we are specifically focusing on interviewing bureaucratic elites in the European Union (EU). Our objective is to provide a clear picture of both the benefits and shortcomings of remote interviews and advise students on how to adjust a research design in cases where in-person interviews are not possible. In order to do so, we benefit from the field experience obtained by two PhD research projects, respectively, focusing on the EU Common Security and Defence Policy toward the Sahel region, and EU foreign policy and strategic orientation toward the People’s Republic of China. Through a systematic assessment of the field work, we aim to show the way to aspiring social scientists starting their research journey in the aftermath of the global pandemic.
