Remappings and Visibility: How Power Circulates and the Conditions of Resistance in the Digital World

Résumé

In their monograph "Algorithmic Reason," Claudia Aradau and Tobias Blanke intricately map the cartographies of algorithmic governance, shedding light on the complex networks inherent in these modes of governance. This mapping exercise, an integral part of the book's broader contemplation on the dynamics of visibility and invisibility within data-driven practices, forms the basis for the examination offered in this review essay. One crucial aspect concerning visibility and invisibility revolves around the illusion that algorithmic systems transcend the realm of the visible. I argue that this illusion obscures the fundamental premise of algorithmic governance: the belief in visibility as perceptibility, rooted in the notion that individuals can be comprehended and their essence captured through the data-driven operations in which they participate. Moreover, this review essay delves into another facet of the visibility-invisibility paradigm subtly interwoven throughout the book: the imperceptibility or opacity of algorithmic processes, pathways, and decision-making modalities. These elements crystallize the stark contrast in access to vision between those governing and those being governed. The opacity and unpredictability inherent in algorithmic systems arguably exacerbate inequality in accessing information within the digital sphere. As a consequence of these opaque systems, the disparity in access to vision within the digital landscape is arguably exacerbated, contributing to increased inequality.
