Introduction - Governing Cities in Africa
Abstract
Half the world's population lives in cities. In sub-Saharan Africa, the number of urban dwellers will have doubled from 2007 to 2030. In 2007 there were 373 million, and demographic projections suggest that there will be around 770 million in 2030, more than the total number of city dwellers in the entire western hemisphere today. This phenomenal growth is powered by the most rapid, and most recent, process of urbanisation on the globe and has led to renewed interest in Africa's cities [First lines]
