Compte-rendu de l'ouvrage : Ann Margaret Doyle, Social equality in education, France and England 1789–1939.

Abstract

Social Equality in Education, France and England, 1789–1939, constitutes a major step in the comparative understanding of two opposed educational systems and their respective relationships to social equality. In contrast to research in sociology and educational sciences, the Franco-British comparison has been largely understudied in the history of education of the 19th and 20th centuries, with some notable exceptions including the works of historian Christina de Bellaigue (2007). Ann Doyle, researcher at the crossroads of history, sociology and politics of education, is therefore in a historiographical blind spot. In this book, she analyses the different positions of England and France in reducing social inequality in education and the reasons why the discourse of egalitarianism appeared much stronger in France than in England.
