Chinese migrant sex workers in France: vulnerabilities and solidarity in a time of pandemic

Résumé

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese migrant sex workers were at the forefront of the precariousness and increase in violence against Asians in France. The nature of their work and working conditions, their undocumented status and repressive laws on prostitution have all contributed to exposing them to all forms of disease transmission. As a result, many have stopped or slowed down their activities during the pandemic in order to protect their health, a decision that has led to precariousness. Those who have continued or resumed their work have often been in direct contact with the growing insecurity and social violence associated with national closures and curfews; in particular, they have witnessed a change in the behaviour of their clients and an increase in violent robberies.
